HOME OF THE WEEK! "My Girl"



My girl is a popular American movie that was released in 1991 that tells the story of  the ups and downs of a  young girl (Anna Chlumsky) and a young boy (Macaulay Culkin). Both the young girl and boy are best friends and  form a special bond because they come from family situations that were extremely hard to deal with. The young girl in the movie named Vada, has a difficult time relating to her father and constantly blames herself for the death of her mother because she died while giving birth. However, her awkward moments do not just end there. Vada is the subject of constant ridicule at school by other young girls and to make matters worse, she is opposed to her fathers latest romance. Her "tomboyish" ways do not attract friendship very easily with other girls. Inevitably, her friendship blossoms with the young boy Thomas J. Sennet, especially since he is also an unpopular kid in school himself.  The two bond to create an amazing friendship. However, tragedy strikes the friends that will forever change their lives. Watch the movie to find out what that dramatic event turns out to be!

This drama was said to take place in 1972 in Madison, Pennsylvania. However, the actual home, the funeral parlor that was owned by the young girl's father and where a lot of the story took place was actually filmed, was in the small town of Bartow, Florida. The address is (The "Sultenfuss Funeral Parlor")  located at the Stanford Inn, 555 East Stanford Street in Bartow, FL. The city of Bartow is located 40 miles east of Tampa and 20 miles north of Orlando. Other filming locations included the following:

  • Ocoee Christian Church, 15 South Bluford Avenue, Ocoee, Florida near Lake Apopka on the western outskirts of Orlando; the old Plant City High School, Plant City, Florida, I-4 between Tampa and Lakeland, and Mirror Lake, near Clermont, west of Orlando.

  • The café, where Vada Sultenfuss (Anna Chlumsky) and her dad (Dan Aykroyd) see Culkin’s mother was Cafe Jake’s, now Two Blondes & A Shrimp, 112 East First Street, Sanford, Florida.
